Discipleship in the New Testament is about disciples making disciples. Jesus told his disciples to “go and make disciples.” Paul regularly made generations of disciples. So the question for us is, “How do we, like them, make disciples that become disciple-makers?”

What do you see on the list that is not typically a part of what we would consider a traditional Bible study?

In addition to what believers would normally do in a traditional small group bible study, 解牧师 also included these four things – Vision Casting, Accountability, Practice, and Goal Setting – and it is precisely these activities that contributed to the multiplication that he saw and is an effective tool that has been used in many contexts to make disciples who can make disciples.

Through the Holy Spirit working in his disciples and a discipleship process that helped them to put into practice the things they learned, these components helped catalyze their growth and gave them good discipleship DNA.

Understanding Each Step 了解每个步骤

Let’s look at each part individually, briefly explain what it is, and discuss why they are important. Specifically we’ll look at those unique elements of vision casting, accountability, practice, and goal setting.

1. Worship 敬拜

There are a variety of ways to worship, however, typically this is done by using 2-3 songs to worship together depending on the time that you have.

2. Pastoral Care/Mutual Prayer 牧养关怀/彼此代祷

Each person share something that they are grateful for this week and one prayer request that the group can pray for. The purpose of this section is to simply have each person share what’s going on in their life and to pray for and encourage each other.

3. Vision Casting 异象传递

During this section, the trainer will use a testimony or Scripture to encourage people toward making disciples (Matt. 28:18-20) and to be bold, have courage, share their faith, and to make disciples.

God’s will for us is to not only grow spiritually but also so that He can use us to make disciples, bringing His kingdom to the world. We gather and grow so that we can be equipped to be sent.

Small groups typically focus on their own spiritual lives and on fellowship, looking primarily inward. The purpose of vision casting during each meeting is to motivate and encourage the participants towards what God wants to do through their lives. It allows the leader to set the tone and direction for the group.

Question: Why do you believe that vision casting to a small group is a contributing factor to disciples and churches multiply?

4. Accountability 回顾/问责

Review:

  1. What did we study last week in our time together?
  2. How did it go obeying what we learned last week?
  3. How did it go sharing with others this last week?

(At the end of each group, everyone will set goals for how they believe the Lord is asking them to obey Him this week and who they believe the Lord is asking them to share with. Having a time of accountability to ask each other how it went obeying what we learned and how we did at sharing is fundamental to forming a healthy DNA of multiplication. We are not just learners. We want to be and make disciples that are transformed by the Word to the degree that it changes us, we obey it, and share it with others.)

Question: Why do you believe that having this time of review and accountability is helpful in contributing to helping disciples to grow and multiply?

5. Participatory Bible Study 参与式查经

  1. What does this story tell us about God/Jesus?
  2. What does this story teach us about people?
  3. In this story is there a command to follow or an example to obey?

6. Practice 练习

Everyone, in their own words, retell the story. Depending on the size of the group, you may need to divide into groups of two.

Practicing retelling the story ensures that the participants understand the story and are competent and confident to retell it to others. Pedagogically speaking, doing so is also employing a different learning mechanism to help people internalize the story.

7. Set Goals and Pray 定目标与祷告

Have a few minutes of silence to allow each person to pray and ask the Lord who He wants them to share with this week and how He wants them to obey Him this week.

  1. How do you believe God wants you to obey Him this week?
  2. Who do you believe God would like you to share with this week?
  3. Pray together asking God to prepare the hearts of those whom you will share with. Pray for God to help each person obey what they learned this week.

You’ll notice that Vision Casting, Accountability, Practice, and Goal Setting is highlighted in RED. 解牧师 is famous for saying, “Don’t skip the red parts.” When you are pressed for time because of our previous experience and conditioning about what’s important in a Bible study, it’s natural to just sing, study, and pray. However, the red parts are extremely important and are the steps that lead to good DNA and to multiplication. So, when pressed for time, sing less songs or shorten the study and conversation time, but without a doubt “don’t skip the red parts.”
