Introduction 介绍

In this session we are going to discuss what it means to have a “shema lifestyle” and use “shema statements” in our daily conversations.

Shema statements are short, intentional statements that are intended to reveal to those around us that we are spiritual people. They can be used as a tool to help us move casual conversations to spiritual conversations. By observing people’s responses to them, we can determine whether they may be open to deeper spiritual conversations.

After having been challenged by the Sadducees, in Matthew 22:36-39, Jesus was asked this by the Pharisees. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All of the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Does anyone know where Jesus was quoting from in this passage?

Jesus was quoting from Deuteronomy 6:4-9. This passage in Hebrew is called the “Shema.” It’s often translated “hear”, but in Hebrew it means literally, “Listen to Obey.” The idea being, when one listens, listening is internalized and necessarily followed by action, otherwise one hasn’t actually listened. This is what it means to “hear.”

Summary of Deuteronomy 6:4-9

The main application of Deuteronomy to the believer today is as we hear the truth about God, that truth is to be internalized which necessarily results in obedience and proclamation.

As a symbol and reminder of our faith, we are to regularly proclaim it to ourselves, to our families, and all we with whom we come in contact. It is a simple proclamation of our identity as spiritual people.

Shema Statements

Around the world, one primary way that church planters are finding others who are open to spiritual conversations and people of peace is by using what is called a “shema lifestyle,” performing actions motivated by love and intentionally making “shema” statements in conversations that proclaim their love for God. This means regularly doing things and saying things that identify themselves as spiritual people who love God and have been changed by God.

For example, one performs a simple, yet kind act to help a neighbor. Naturally, the neighbor may say, “Thank you.” A person living a shema lifestyle could say, “Your welcome. I am blessed so much by God, and therefore, I, myself, enjoy blessing others.”

Or when discussing family or marriage with acquaintances and strangers, one might say, “One of the greatest blessings from God is to have a wife (or kids). Recently, he’s been teaching me a lot through them.”

Simply praying for someone can be a type of shema statement.

It can be difficult to know how to initiate spiritual conversations with people, especially strangers. Being intentional about living a shema lifestyle and using shema statements is a simple daily thing that all Christians can do. There are as many ways to make a shema statement as there are potential human interactions. The basic idea of a shema statement is to make statements in our daily conversations that can naturally lead to spiritual conversations.

Activity 活动

At your table, each person right down 5 shema actions and or statements based upon your regular interactions that you can use in your daily life.

After people have had time to do this, allow everyone to share one with the group.

Practice练习

In pairs or small groups, role-play a conversation or an act of service and resulting conversation between you and a lost person. This should be based on a typical conversation you often have (e.g. with a work colleague over lunch, with an acquaintance you meet while on a morning walk, visiting a sick friend/colleague etc). Try to include a shema statement naturally into the conversation. Then change roles.

Afterwards, have a brief time of feedback with the larger group on their impressions and how it went.

Summary 总结

Using “Shema” statements and actions can help us stay close to God by living “out loud”. Also, people who are tuned in might be interested to learn more. We see in Deuteronomy 6 and other passages that God wants us to have a Shema lifestyle. Living a Shema lifestyle is foundational and an important first step in learning to reach the lost.
