Introductory Discussion

In small groups, have the trainees discuss these questions.

  1. When sharing the Gospel with someone, have you ever had someone believe immediately?
  2. Have you ever been completely rejected?
  3. Have you ever been in the situation where you didn’t know whether the person was just being friendly or whether they were actually spiritually interested?

As church planters, when we are frequently sharing the Gospel, it can often be hard to determine what to do with people that we are unsure about. They are willing to receive us, as the messenger, and they seem to be open to discussing spiritual things. However, they aren’t ready to receive the Gospel yet.

Raise your hand if you’ve experienced number 3, a situation where you shared with someone; they didn’t reject you, but weren’t entirely ready to believe, and you didn’t know what to do next.

As people raise hands, ask a few people how they handled it.

Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light People, and Those Who Are Already Christians

It’s a complicated situation. However, many church planters use a concept called “Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light.”

First, sometimes we will share with people who are already Christians, and we know what to do with them. We cast vision and offer to train them.

Red light people are people who are not spiritually open.

Green light people are people who are quickly willing to believe and take the next step. However, it’s the yellow light people who can be a bit more complicated. What do we do with them?

To help us with yellow light people, the tool we will introduce during this section is the Short-term Discovery Bible Study Process. In fact, it can done with just about anyone. Meeting every week, they can last from 1-2 months, and the purpose is to allow you, as the evangelist, to follow up with people, and to give the hearer time to process the Gospel before making a decision.

Here is an example of how it works.

You are sharing the Gospel with someone, and they are open and interested, but not ready to commit and take the next steps. So you say to this yellow light person, “If you’re willing, I’d love to keep talking about this with you, learn more together, and share my own experience with you. How would you feel about meeting a few more times, and I’ll share a few more stories about God/Jesus?”

Some people will say they’re not interested. This is good because it helps you clarify where they are at. Others will accept your invitation to study further. Then you can say, “Let’s set up a time to do that. Also, it works much better to have these discussions in groups. Share with a few other people about the things that I shared with you and invite them to join us. It’s a fun discussion, there’s no pressure, and we can get to know each other better.”

It’s always better to form a group, but if that’s not possible, one-on-one is OK, too. However, it is a discovery bible study, where the attendees are going to answer questions and learn together so usually it works better with groups, which increases the interaction. It also leads to the natural formation of churches.

Mutual Care and Prayer

  • What are you thankful for this week?
  • What needs do you or others have that we can pray for?
  • Is there a way that we, together, can help meet this need?
  • Pray together for these things.

Review 回顾

  • What story did we learn last week? What did we learn from it?
  • How did it go obeying the truth we learned last week?
  • How did it go sharing what we learned with someone else?

Look Up 往上看

New Bible Story

  1. Tell the Bible Story in your own words.
  2. Read the passage from the Bible together (If your attendees are not literate, share the story in your own words 1-2 more times)
  3. Break into small groups and allow each person to re-tell the story in their own words.
  4. What do we learn about God/Jesus from this story?
  5. What do we learn about people or ourselves from this story?
  6. What is the primary lesson I have learned from this story?

Look Forward 往前看

Application 应用

  1. How can I apply this story to my life this week?
  2. Who can I share with this week about what I have learned?

Important Things to Remember When Leading a Short-Term Discovery Bible Study

  1. Create group studies in natural communities.
  2. Focus on discipleship to conversion. This process allows for interested people to interact with God’s Word, develop an understanding of prayer, and to internalize and follow the teachings of Jesus.
  3. Allow for self-discovery. Remember you are a facilitator. Do not preach or teach. Allow the attendees to reflect on the bible story for themselves. Allow them to discover God’s Word for themselves. You can however share your own thoughts in the same way that other attendees do.
  4. Emphasize internalizing and following the lessons learned. Do not be afraid to challenge the attendees to obey something from the passage. As they begin to obey truths found in the Word of God, the Holy Spirit can begin to work in their lives and convict them.
  5. Emphasize passing it on to others. Do not be afraid to ask them to share what they have learned with people. Allowing them to share with others also helps them internalize the truth for themselves. Plus, you may find that others are interested in this way of life as well as a result.
